About Me

My photo
I'm a 'thinker' and a 'relater' and I enjoy the little things that life has to offer. I'm passionate about so many things, music and dance are couple of them. There are two quotations that have influenced me greatly, and here they are: 'Sometime in life you will go on a journey; it will be the longest journey you have taken; it is the journey to find yourself.' Here's the other - 'Keep your heart open to dreams; for as long as there's a dream, there is hope, and as long as there is hope, there is joy in living.' So, keep calm and carry on. Love !

Wise Ones, contd ..

I love these.

There are four kinds of people:

(1) Those who make great things happen
(2) Those who watch things happen
(3) Those who block things from happening, and
(4) Those who wonder what happened

Take the time to be aware; it is the opportunity to help others.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

Discovering the 'Roots'

I remember being fascinated by a TV commercial for a website called Ancestry.com. It was a new concept, in 2005 perhaps.  I love how in the US, they trace the roots with the Social Security Number  and form the family tree.

Hailing from India, a country that has existed and birthed generations much earlier that the US; I often wish that our ancestors had some sort of tracking mechanism. I'm glad that the PAN number concept has sprung up in recent times, but nevertheless. How many of us can pin point where we came from?  I would love to know though. Many of us have moved cities. Many of us have parents that made the move earlier on in their careers. I know Indians in the US who were born here because their great grand parents moved here in 1950s.

I am curious to know more about my Ancestory. We don't have any tracking mechanism such as Social Security numbers, but it would be nice if I knew the profession the men folk were involved in, where did the move to, what was their place of worship. All of our ancestors are from South India, that I know for sure. Did they migrate from other village, perhaps from other places, I don't have a clue. There is a theory that Iyers (Ayyars)  may have migrated from northern regions generations ago, I don't know anything about that. Googling on this theory may provide more information.

Hubby and I, happen to trace back to similar roots. Both our dad's are from a village called Kalakkad in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. Both our moms' roots trace to a closeby village called Valliyoor. In Hindu Tradition, each family worships a deity called Kula Deivam (Family Deity). They are considered the ancestral god, whom the forefathers and relatives have worshiped through the ages. This is the guardian angel. Every village has a temple for this Family Deity, since most of the family would live in the same village, and be related and be of the same caste. People who have migrated to other places still visit their ancestral village to pay their respects by offerings. Many youngsters are taking the initiative to visit their 'Kula Deivam' and give back both monetarily for the local community.

Let's put some perspective via a mapping below:

Random Musings on a lazy afternoon

It was lunch time at work. Got myself a sandwich from the cafeteria downstairs and got back to my office. It was a relatively slow day at work, so I decided to do some reading online. I casually googled 'Fortune 500 list for 2012'. I was impressed in seeing the results. Chevron was listed in world # 3 ranking. Exxon was on top, followed by Chevron. Walmart, and Conoco phillips followed the list. Way to go Chevron. This is awesome; and in experiencing the chevron work ethic and lifestyle, I think it is well deserved. I'm thankful to god for giving me the opportunity.

On a different note, I totally vouch on this quote.

Will you allow the doubts in your own mind to stop you from getting to the places that you truly have the ability to go. Do you allow what people say about your work, or your dreams affect you ?
The only way that you won't be criticized is if you live a life without taking much action. We will always have people who come against us, even when we feel like we are doing what we can to help humanity. Just be you! Don't let anyone stop you from being who you really are at heart! we have to realize that people will always talk about what we do, as long as we are doing something.

Posting after a hiatus

Last I blogged about six months back, that sounds crazy to me. I'm being lazy, in fact, work has been busy; plus my energy levels run empty by 6 pm, I know !

Now for some penning of my thoughts.

I'm so grateful to everything, everyone. Can't really complain about my 17 mile commute, becasuse I've always driven that distance which is the norm here in Houston. I  keep active so that we channel Archu's energy in the right path and spend quality time with my baby. She loves to sit down with me and pratice her alphabet writing, numbers and we wrap up with fun coloring with crayons.

We hosted a satsang at home, our first one., and It was such a divine experience. My humble thanks to all those who made it possible. All devotees of Houston Namadwaar were present and chanting the divine mantra, and krishna bhajans.

I am developing a magnetic attraction towards the world of spirituality, healthy living, yoga and excersing.  I have always been spiritual since chilhood, and as I mature, I am drifting more toward spirituality and a quest for truth, for answers, for divinity and for self realization. I want to be good to everyone. I dont want to talk about others to others. I am not interested in petty mis-understandings. I am watchful of my words. I want to get to the next level. I'm more focused on my health and in keeping a positive outlook. Isn't that a step up in the right direction? I believe it is !

On a light note

National language, or not ?

Hindi is the official national language of India. It's amazing to see how each state has its own local dialect and still we remain bonded as one country. This truly reflects Unity in Diversity. It's funny though; I went to CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) board and learnt Hindi as my second language elective, and Sanskrit as my third elective. I did not learn to write Tamil, my mothertongue. Mom taught it to me at home.

This Hindi taught at school is very literary, that is, we learnt vyakaran (grammer), wrote hindi essays, read poems, read dohas etc. It was 'bookish', if you know what I'm saying, not the Bollywood way.

I've been in peculiar situations here in the US where we are in a group and hindi friends just talk to each other in Hindi, and presume everyone is comfortable. Really ? No. I have a very empathetic personality and I always put myself in others shoes before judging or talking. I think about how it will affect the person. That's just how I am.I wish others were empathetic as well. It would save the world so much trouble.

What am I watching

I was seeing TV last night after a heavy dinner, following my night MBA class. Happy to be home after driving amidst reckless race car drivers. Not a big time movie buff myself, but I am appreciating good movies lately. Thanks to many websites like soku, yoku that upload Tamil and Hindi movies for folks like me and hubby who are lazy to drive 40 plus miles to see an Indian Movie in Bigscreen at a desi theatre.

Mouna Guru - Saw it last evening, it kept me glued to the screen .. I was waiting for the next twist to happen. Arulnithi, who I saw for the first time actually impressed me. Climax was slightly too melodramatic for me.

Nanban - First thought that went thru me - how good can a 'ditto' remake be (after having enjoyed 3 Idiots to the fullest), but I must say Vijay took me by surprise. No item song, not punch dialogue, no show off, no sarcasm, just plain little situations portrayed thoughfully. Very nice !

Adventures of Tintin - What a visual treat for the 3 D eyes. Archu me and Hubby dear had our focus only on the big screen with popcorn and coke to complete the experience. Loved it ! and not to forget the update on facebook to share my happiness :-)

Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol - This one hubby dear and I managed to pull into our schedules, while Archu was at preschool, to have some couple (us ) time. It was totally worth it.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked - This one was so totally for my bubu Archu. I enjoyed looking at her gleaming eyes and million-watt smile seeing the bigscreen, and I got busy with my popcorn !

Ko - Oh man ! Just could'nt hold myself  from constantly asking questions to hubby dear about this one - I was amazed and immersed into the storyline. Very fresh and brought a new perspective.

Mangatha - Total winner with us. This was special for me because Amma, Appa, Vidyu and We 3 watched together in Chennai, in Inox. Archu was constantly singing Mangatha song which was totally cute see see and hear :-)

7aum Arivu - Good theme, slow storyline. Initially started off solid and later just vaporised away.

Osthe - Could'nt tolerate the first 10 minutes itself !

As for bollywood, we caught up with Meri Brother Ki Dulhan, Dirty Picture, and a special note on RaOne for insulting Tamilians ! Did you really do that SRK? You just lost one of your long time devoted fans :)

Once bitten twice shy, or may be more

I stumbled upon the following on a website called experienceproject.com. I can relate to this one so much, and I have decided to put it on my blog. It goes like this ..

" I try to learn from the mistakes that were made in past relationship, become wiser and more cautious after each one. Therefore it takes me time to be able to show how I really feel about a person. Although inside my heart melts for every compliment made by them, every sweet or kind thing they do, and truly appreciate the warmth they show.

But I will not throw myself out there and wear my heart on my sleeve until they have earned my trust. I have been hurt, and badly in relationships.  Its just the reality of my life, and the choices I may have made.  So I am a sceptic, and will believe words that are backed up by actions more so thea just words. I will make sure they have shown me and have accepted me and respected me for being me. I cannot pretend to be who I am not.  And allowed me the time needed to gain that comfort in that relationship. Once that happens I am the warmest and most loving person to be with."

Just for laughs - what went around came back

A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly, her husband came into the kitchen.

"Careful," he said, "Careful! Put in some more oil! Oh my GOD! You're cooking too many at once. Too many! Turn them!

Turn them now! You need more oil. Oh my God! Where are we going to get more oil? The eggs are going to stick! Careful, careful! I said be CAREFUL!

You NEVER listen to me when you're cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you crazy? Have you lost your mind? Don't forget to salt them. You know you always forget that. Use the salt. Use the Salt! The Salt!"

The wife stared at him angrily, "What is wrong with you? You think I don't know how to fry a couple of eggs?"

The husband calmly replied, "I just wanted to show you how it feels like when I'm DRIVING and you do the same! ! !"

Been there, done that .. !? ;-)

Culinary yumm

We love to dine out every once in a while - fine dining, casual, fast food .. We picked Olive Garden this time 'coz it was long due. Our waiter was such a sweetheart - started us off with free tasting white wine .. for which I have developed an 'acquired taste', not to forget the yummy minestrone soup with garlic bread complimentary appetizers. This is always a winner with us ! Hubby and I decided to divide a single entree by 2, and order 1 drink. So, we choose to go with Fettucini Alfredo, with grilled onions, tomatoes, asparagus, banana peppers (sweet Italian peppers), zucchini and squash .. complete with chocolate martini ! Yumm Yumm !

Relished the dinner that night ! Our waiter was so generous in brigning refills on the soup and breadsticks. As for our dear Archu, she shared the soup and fettucini pasta from me and was busy coloring the sheet that he brough for her :-)

That feeling of heart sinking

May I say, that this this is not a new feeling by now - because it seemed like the same story repeating, but with another person - I got the frantic call from India this morning, from my sister to be specific, that my cousin brother's MIL passed away due to cancer. She has a daughter younger to me, and 5 months pregnant. How sad and unfortunate is that ! My prayers are with her, may she rest in peace. Sai Ram.

Friends are the new Family

As far as I live from 'Home', and by 'Home' now I am not sure if I should call US my home or India; I am beginning to realize that friends are becoming family. It has been 4 years since I knew my close tamil circle here in Houston. Although I do not see them frequently, when I do, the bond gets tighter.

Not having blood-relations closeby, the phone and email is my only way of connecting back home in India. Whereas it is the same familiar faces that I see at each important event or hindu festival here that makes me feel the way I do. I told hubby last night, that I think slowly the bond will get stronger and our kids will know each other growing up. I like that I can speak tamil my way when I meet this gang, I like that we share a similar background in terms of familiarity with tamil movies, tamil songs, tamil festivals etc. It is that comfort level that I like despite having different personality types.

I felt like penning this down, so I can remember this feeling when I read my blog 20 years later, and I hope to be a part of this circle then too. Ofcourse, there are many loving friends that live closeby who share the same cultural background and like I have mentioned in  my earlier postings, to love and be loved is the most important thing that matters to me in my life. I love them all, although I don't know if they know it. I hope I can make some long lasting relationships with them for me and my family, and Archu will be happy I did.

Relationships take time to grow, while there is also an inevitable aspect of mutual respect required, trustworthiness and 'being-there-when-I-need-you' feelings are a part of the package. My new year 2012 resolution is to remember to wish friends on their birthdays, (through facebook reminders)

:-)

Kolaveri phenomenon

I casually clicked on a you tube link one afternoon. At first glance it didn't mean much to me but after reading a couple of articles about how this simple Tamil movie song has captured hearts across state borders that's when I went back to the video, and this time listened with concentration. I'm referring to the song "Why this kolaveri" from the tamil movie 3.

Genuinely simple lyrics coupled with an air of youth spirited me up and I started to love it too. It made to nostalgic to listen to Tanglish (Tamil - English) which I don't often hear in the US. It reminded me of living in Chennai, talking tamil to the locals, ending words in a tanglish accent by adding a U (love -u, tire- U ) and so forth.

Dhanush continues to surprise me with his talents, I never liked him as an actor but I think that this lad has belief in himself and has stuck to his faith in doing what he thinks he can and he is only getting better with age. This guy can pen down lyrics, sing, dance, and actually acts well in his movies. I am happy that this Tamil song has united the North to the South in movies.

What do you do when your car gets towed

Imagine walking back to your parking spot and not finding your car. Initially you think you are crazy to forget where you parked, but then it occurs to you, that your car has been towed. For real.

University of Houston has over 50K students who are enrolled, and parking is  nightmare. After circling the lots for about 25 minutes, I realized that I needed to park ASAP to walk all the way to business school and make it to class on time.

There was the campus bookstore and I decided to park in the only spot I saw open. Little did I realize that I would be a victim of towing. It was 9 pm at night, I stayed calm, I knew I had to think through it. Bad things happen, and when you go through them, you become wiser and of course stronger.

As for my car, we retrieved it from the impound lot for a hefty price. I had to call sathya, he drove with Archu at night to pick me up. I had to do all the explanation. I felt guilty. I had made a mistake. A costly one. I will never forget this day.

On a side note, here is my Minnie Mouse 2011.

Grateful and Beyond

There are so many things to be grateful for;  it's a great thing to write about because we can loose perspective sometimes with the mountains of responsibilities and concerns we face everyday. I'm grateful to be 'above ground' with good health and a family to nurture and take care of. I am grateful for the good people around me.

Appendicitis came as a sudden blow to me, as to everyone else that have experienced it. The purpose of my posting is to comprehensively bring together my feeling of gratefulness and care that the experience has brought with it, and for me to be there for each one of them in time of need.

Hubby, I am grateful for, first and foremost for staying right there with me throughout. I have to thank my friends for offering to take care of Archana through a couple of nights. If I named all the friends from wonderful acquaintances to tried and true friends, I'd have exceeding the limit on my posting. I do know there are a lot of good people, near and far, who I can count on, who care about me, and who want only the best for me. I truly value my friends and will never have "enough" or too many.

To mention a few - Jayashree, Priya, Nipa, Vandhana, Ginu, Malathi, Swathi, Anu, Anju, Vani - thank you so much for bringing me freshly-made home cooked food and visiting me.

Uma, Prati, Leena, Revathi, Rohini, Lakshmi, Ruma, Vila, Vidya, Krupa, Ramya, Brinda  - thank you for showing that you care through your emails and phone calls.

Thank you amma and appa for your ample phone calls from India enquiring about me. Thank you to all of you at my workplace, and hubbys' - for your emails. As is my nature, I never forget any one's good deeds and I will always reach out to them when they need me. How can I forget to thank my boss at work, who were extremely supportive - Jason and Saurabh.

Thanks to each one of you who sent their wishes to me on facebook and telling that you care.

Its paint time

It was for the first time in years after moving into home sweet home, we began the painting project. I chose to start small, so just focussed on the half-wall in the kitchen. Color - light olive green. I was surprised that it was such an un-complicated task - just pick up the right tools and voila - you'll be done before you know it .

Painting in India was such a huge task .. scraping & scrubbing; but here its totally a 'hands-on' easy approach ! Thumbs up to Hubby and I .. and of course can I forget my little helper who did more than was needed .. :)

Colors - Orange as an accent over the fireplace, and madder red on the other walls. Never stop exploring, colors reflect your personality !

See my little helper -->

Tax system Explained !

I found this a very interesting read, from yahoo posts ..

TAX CODE EXPLAINED

Suppose that every evening, 10 men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.

The fifth would pay $1.

The sixth would pay $3.

The seventh would pay $7.

The eighth would pay $12.

The ninth would pay $18.

The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do. The 10 men drank in the bar every evening and were quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner said "Since you are all such good customers, I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20." Drinks for the 10 men would now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected, they would still drink for free, but what about the other six men, the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share? They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33, but if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.

So, using the principle of our tax system, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by a higher percentage based on how poor he was, and he proceeded to suggest the amounts that each should now pay.

Therefore, the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing.

The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% saving).

The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% saving).

The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% saving).

The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% saving).

The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving).

Each of the six was better off than before, and now half of the men continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.

"I only got a dollar out of the $20 saving," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, "But he got $10!"

"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a buck too. It's unfair, he got 10 times more benefit than me!"

"That's true!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back, when I got only $2? The wealthy always win!"

"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "we didn't get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!"

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists, labor unions and government officials, is how the tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

Ice Ice Baby

A layer of snow can be pretty, how about layers of slippery ice. This is the situation in Houston and surroundings for a day now. This is my first streak at sub zero temps, and boy does it suck :) I walked over my front lawn grass and heard the grass breaking beneath my feet, and same with the leaves on the were frosted with ice.  Good news is it will go away tomorrow .. So for me, no work today and I'm cozy at staying home with Archu.

I can only imagine the plight of the north-east that has been submerged in snow for quite some time now! Stay warm folks.

It's all in a name

Silly me - I decided to make a Brinjal (Eggplant) dish, as hubby brought home fresh Eggplant from the store. It was a while since I made any Eggplant dish, and you know how busy it gets sometimes -- i knew there were 4 dishes that can be made, but it didnt quite strike me what was what --

-Kathrikai Pitla (Eaten with Traditional south indian meal)
-Kathrika Gotsu (Eaten with Pongal etc)
-Baingan Bartha
-Baghara Baingan (My goodnesss, I always confuse with these two)

So now you know, how I'm justifying my reason to mix up the recipes :-) Thanks to google and youtube, My Gotsu came out delicious !

Instagram Discovery

Everyone else mastered Instagram in their 20s. I’m showing up in my 40s like I just discovered the app yesterday 😂 No kidding - Back in 20...
